A driver's licence provides people with greater independence and opens up opportunities for employment. Wiltja supports all students to obtain their Provisional Licence by the end of year 12.
The Wiltja Driver Education Program is supported by DPTI's 'On the Right Track - Remote' Aboriginal road safety and driver licensing program.
In 2015, we were very lucky to receive a $5000 SGIC Community Grant to help cover the cost of instructors, materials, resources and excursions. This has allowed us to deliver a great Driver Education program as part of a SACE Stage 1 Integrated Learning unit.
The Wiltja Driver Education Program requires a long term commitment to school attendance and engagement. The program involves a number of steps:
Year 10
support to obtain the identification documents required by Service SA to issue a Learner's Permit (Ls)
classroom-based sessions to learn the road rules in preparation for sitting the Ls test
sitting the theory test and obtain Ls
Year 11-12
75 hours of supervised driving (60 day hours + 15 night hours) with accredited driving instructors
completion of Competency-Based Training (CBT) logbook
final driving assessment to issue Certificate of Competence for Provisional Licence (Ps)
Hazard Perception test
obtaining Ps
In addition to these elements, the Driver Education Program also covers a range of topics to help students protect themselves and others on the road:
driving in the country and on unsealed roads
infant/child car restraint workshops run by the Australian Red Cross
